Summer 2013 is looking bright in Los Cabos Baja Sur. The popular Mexican tourist destination is getting ready to host the largest surf and music festival in the sport’s history in Mexico. The ‘LOS CABOS OPEN OF SURF, music and surf fest’.
Thanks to the support of state and local tourism authorities as well as the hotel association trust fund, starting June 17 through the 23rd, at Costa Azul’s famous Zippers beachbreak, a strong right that produces 8 to 10 foot waves, will be the site of one of the world’s most prestigious surf competitions and first of it’s kind in Mexico, a WQS (world qualifying series) MENS 6 STAR EVENT.
This world class event will give some of the best surfers in the planet a chance to rack up much needed points inside ASP’s (association of surfing professional, top surfing regulator) dream tour and grab a ticket to the coveted WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TOUR (WTC). Not to mention, the $155,000 dollar purse.
The ‘LOS CABOS OPEN OF SURF’ is a new and unique event in Mexico that will invariably position Los CABOS as a World class tourist destination for surfers from all over the planet. An interesting fact worth pointing out is that Los CABOS location in the tip of the Baja peninsula produces amazing waves in the winter on the pacific side and in the summer in the Sea of Cortes side. Something few surf destinations offer. Because of this, the tourism board and organizers have committed to making this an annual event, with the hopes that it will become the most important stop in Latinamerica for international surfers in the World tour.

LOS CABOS, Baja California Sur, Mexico (Friday, March 15, 2013) – The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star Los Cabos Open of Surf has officially been added to the ASP North America schedule, unfolding at Cabo’s righthand cobblestone pointbreak of Zippers from June 17 through 23, 2013.
The addition of the Los Cabos Open of Surf further develops the Latin region of ASP events and marks the first of three major contests slated to unfold between Mexico and El Salvador this season.
“Latin America is really beginning to establish a strong presence on the ASP North America schedule and we’re excited to have the Los Cabos Open of Surf as a new addition for 2013,” Meg Bernardo, ASP North America Executive Manager said. “We’ve seen rapid growth in events between Mexico and El Salvador over the past five years and the new Los Cabos event will showcase one of many quality locations that Mexico has to offer.”
With several budding talents emerging from both Mexico, Central and South America, the Los Cabos Open of Surf’s ASP 6-Star status will allow several up-and-comers the chance to assert their talents among some of the world’s top qualifying hopefuls while competing close to home.
“We’ve seen so many incredible performances from the underground Latinos in recent events,” Brian Robbins, ASP North America Tour Manager said. “The Los Cabos Open of Surf will be the perfect platform for young Latin surfers to mix it up with some big international names and establish themselves on a global level while securing big points towards their ranking.”
As a side note, the Los Cabos Open of Surf will also include a series of beach concerts with international artists and DJ’s, beach bars, a food fair offering fresh, local cuisine, fashion shows featuring some of the top surf brands, art walks and eco-friendly activities, showcasing the best of the surf lifestyle.
