Todos Santos is home to artists, writers, surfers, and organic farmers. It was settled by Jesuit Padres as a farming community and mission in 1724, to supply the mission community of La Paz with fruits, vegetables, wine, and sugar cane
Anglo whalers visited Todos Santos in 1849, calling the little town "an oasis" with "friendly and intelligent" people. After the mission era, Todos Santos thrived as the Baja sugar cane capitol, with 8 sugar cane mills during it's peak in the 1800's. Sugar prices later dropped after WWII, and all but one sugar cane mill closed after the largest fresh water spring dried up in 1950. The last mill closed in 1965, although small household operations continued through the early 1970's.
The town began to fade, but came back to life again when the road from San Pedro to Cabo San Lucas was paved in the mid 1980's, linking Todos Santos to La Paz and Cabo San Lucas.
