| Reggae Fest Rocks Baja! By Robert Quirk The 1st Annual Baja Reggae Fest, held Feb. 15 on the beach in the sleepy town of Pescadero between Cabo San Lucas and Todos Santos, was a big success, drawing a mixed crowd of all ages from mainland Mexico, United States, and Canada. The music, scheduled to play from 12:00 noon until 12:00 midnight, got off the a late and slow start so typical of our local region, kicking in about 4pm and playing until 1am, under a full moon and colored lights that made an incredible back drop for the best music show to hit the Baja in recent memory. The scene was magical and the music fantastic, coming from big named international Reggae bands including Humble Soul from Hawaii, Ganja from Mexico City, La Celestina from Guadalajara, Riddim Forz from Baja, Dubmastercam from the USA, Dave Quintz from the USA, El Leon de Zion Sound System from Mexico City, Mustapha "Bald Head Dread" from Jamaica, and Native Elements from San Francisco. Activities on the beach included afternoon volleyball, Frisbee throwing, and late night baton fire twirlers. Spectators were also treated to an evening hoola hoop contest, won by ringer Bonnie Leddy of San Jose del Cabo The local Todos Santos police department did an excellent job providing security to a very well behaved crowd, estimated to have swelled to 1350 during its peak in the later hours. The San Pedritos RV Park, which hosted the event, was perfect for late night party goers who could simply camp on the beach after the concert and a few cervezas, instead of driving home on the 2-lane highway. The concert helped raise money for the restoration of the Todos Santos Theater, donated funds to Casa Hogar in Cabo San Lucas, and also helped the local economy with various local food, drink,, and craft vendors having a chance to service the crowd. A long list of sponsors for this years event include Corona, who donated the stage and travel funds for most of the bands, Azteca TV, Flecha Verde, Cabo Mil, Aguila Transportes, Sabritas, Suburcabos, and La Palma Restaruant. Many thanks to the Victor Guluarte, President of the Ayudamiento of La Paz, for his energy to make the show happen, as well as San Pedritos RV Park owners Franciso and Napoleon Domiguez, who shared their beautiful property for this years event. The concert promoters, Charo De La Fuente of Todos Santos and Brad Baer of Santanas and
Gypsies Restaurants, are already planning the 2nd Annual Baja Reggie Fest for
next year, to be held on Valentines Day weekend and extending to a 2-day show from Feb.
14-15, 2004. Next years event promises to even more spectacular, as drawing
big named bands to our beautiful area from the cold country seems to be no problem. Hope
to see you here next year. Robert Quirk Tel: 01152 (624) 14-26244 Email: ReggaeFest@CaboHomesAndCondos.com |
